Love these gates! I have several throughout my house. They are attractive, made well, and come easy to assemble. These gates work great! Not just for the pups.....but little ones as well.

Are the side panels included in the max. 40"/70" widths or can I use the smaller version to close a 5' opening if I leave the side panels at an angle?
How long is the smaller version with the two side panels straight with the center panels? Or, when the gate is placed flat on the floor, how long is the entire gate (panels flat as well)? Is that how you measure the maximum widths (small 40" and large 70") with the side panels included in the measurement?
The side panels are the support and stand just as the picture shows. They are not included in the width dimension. You will need to purchase the gate that meets or exceeds the width of your opening.
The 70" size will work for your 5' door opening. You will adjust the gate's size down to as close to the 5' opening as you can.

Will my energetic strong yorkie be able to push it aside to wiggle out the side?
Also, I see comments about it being heavy...I will be pushing it aside or sliding it smaller... when he is allowed into the other rooms. Is that easy to do on a daily basis?

I doubt your yorkie will be able to push it. I have four small dogs and this has never happened. This gate is not a good candidate for daily adjustment. It can easily be moved by a person however. It is not too heavy.

What is the mess made of?
How durable is the mesh? My dog jumps up and scratches and am concerned on how easily it can be torn
It is a wire mesh. VERY DURABLE!

What do the footings look like and how are hardwood floors protected from being scratched by the footings?
Small rubber cushions on bottom. I use on hardwood and tile floors.
